Darwin Nunez opened the scoring in the 24th minute, slotting home a through ball from Trent Alexander-Arnold to give the Reds the lead.
Southampton responded well and equalized just before halftime through a goal from Nathan Tella, making it 1-1 heading into the break.
But Liverpool regained the lead in the second half, with Harvey Elliott scoring in the 68th minute to make it 2-1. Despite Southampton’s efforts to find another equalizer, the Reds held on to secure their spot in the semi-finals.
The draw for the semi-finals will take place later tonight, with Liverpool awaiting their next opponent in the Carabao Cup. It was a hard-fought victory for Arne Slot’s side, who will now turn their attention to the next round as they look to defend their title.
Overall, Liverpool’s quality shone through in the end, but Southampton can take heart from their spirited second-half display. It was a valiant effort from the Saints, but ultimately they fell just short against a strong Liverpool side.
