A rural region in Spain is offering remote workers $16,000 to relocate and conduct business in a picturesque green valley, located just under three hours from Madrid. This initiative is part of a growing trend among countries seeking digital nomads.
The Regional Government of Extremadura recently introduced the “Live in Ambroz” program, which provides grants of about $16,620 to remote workers who commit to living and working in the region for at least two years. This program aims to combat depopulation in rural areas and revitalize the Ambroz Valley, known for its stunning landscapes and charming villages.
Prithwiraj Choudhury, a professor at Harvard Business School, has been studying innovation, remote work, and the concept of “work from anywhere” for over a decade. He believes that the rise of digital nomads will change the spatial distribution of talent, allowing people to live in diverse communities outside of major cities.
Digital nomads, who have the ability to work remotely and a desire to explore the world, are forming symbiotic relationships with countries worldwide. By choosing to live in more affordable and beautiful locations, they contribute to local economies through their consumption of goods and services.
The Ambroz Valley program will distribute 200 grants to digital nomads, which can be used for housing and land. Candidates must first obtain Spain’s digital nomad visa and official residency before applying to the Live in Ambroz program. This initiative not only benefits remote workers financially and experientially but also fosters connections between locals and nomads, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and entrepreneurship. “Creo que es fácil quedarse cómodo y permanecer en el mismo lugar y vivir donde está tu trabajo o donde está tu familia. Aunque los gobiernos no siempre puedan llevarse bien, parece que la gente generalmente puede llevarse bien entre sí y son muy solidarios. Realmente te da mucha fe en la humanidad,” añadió.
