Socialists, Ecologists, Communists, and France Unbowed have come together to form a left-wing alliance called the “New Popular Front.” This alliance aims to challenge the far right in upcoming snap parliamentary elections at the end of the month.

President Emmanuel Macron called for these two-round elections following the strong performance of the anti-immigration National Rally (RN) in the recent European elections. Opinion polls suggest RN leading in the first round with 29.5% of the vote, closely followed by the left-wing alliance at 28.5%, putting Mr. Macron’s Renew party in third place with 18%.

The political landscape in France is tense as each group claims they will block the others from gaining power in the National Assembly. The uncertainty has also affected the financial markets, with the Paris stock exchange experiencing significant losses.

The left-wing alliance includes the Socialists, Greens, Communists, and France Unbowed, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Despite internal differences, these parties have joined forces to prevent the National Rally from taking control.

Campaigning has intensified, with direct attacks being launched between the main political groups. The polls indicate a close race between the National Rally and the left-wing alliance, with both parties having a chance of winning.

The far-right leader, Marine Le Pen, and her party have outlined their plans to address immigration and energy costs if they come into power. The left-wing alliance, on the other hand, aims to reverse pension reforms and increase the minimum wage.

The upcoming elections are crucial for the future of France, with the possibility of a financial crisis looming if extreme parties come to power. The political landscape is complex, with alliances forming and dissolving as the race heats up.
