A new documentary tracks the life of a boy in a small Spanish town, whose family envisions him becoming a professional bullfighter. This career choice may seem unconventional in a time where bullfighting is viewed as a cruel and outdated sport, largely due to animal welfare concerns.
Social norms in certain parts of Castellón differ from the more progressive attitudes in nearby Valencia and Barcelona. The boy’s grandfather, undeterred by the controversy surrounding bullfighting, pushes his grandson to follow in his footsteps.
The recently premiered documentary, titled “The Boy and the Suit of Lights,” showcased at the Sheffield Documentary Festival, follows the journey of Borja and his grandfather, Matias, over several years.
Director Inma De Reyes, a Castellón native, was exposed to bullfighting culture early on but was unaware of her hometown’s status as Spain’s bullfighting capital.
The film delves into the complexities of family values and how they shape children’s personalities, particularly in a traditional setting like Castellón.
As the director explored the subject for the documentary, she discovered the depth of bullfighting traditions in her hometown, shedding light on a culture she had previously overlooked.
A connection to a bullfighting school through a friend led her to Borja, the young protagonist of the film.
The documentary shines a light on the inner conflict within Borja, torn between his family’s expectations and his own aspirations, set against the backdrop of the declining bullfighting industry.
Filmed over five years, “The Boy and the Suit of Lights” emphasizes Borja’s personal growth and struggles, rather than focusing solely on the controversial practice of bullfighting.
Despite the challenges of capturing Borja’s internal struggles without explicit dialogue, the film effectively portrays his emotional journey through subtle cues and expressions.
The documentary captures poignant moments of Borja’s life, including his training sessions with a replica bull’s head and the contrast between his family’s expectations and his own desires.

Aunque legal en España, muchas ciudades individuales han prohibido la práctica de las corridas de toros. También todavía tiene lugar ocasionalmente en partes de Portugal, el sur de Francia, México, Ecuador, Venezuela y Perú.
Pero ha sido prohibido en muchos países, incluido el Reino Unido, o está en proceso de ser prohibido. Una prohibición en Colombia se está eliminando gradualmente y se espera que entre en vigor completamente en 2027.
De Reyes es consciente de que algunas personas podrían escuchar sobre el aspecto de las corridas de toros de la película y desanimarse a verla, pero ella dice que el mensaje del documental es más “que los niños deberían ser permitidos explorar y ser quienes quieran ser’.
“Y también espero que amplíe [la mente de los espectadores], no juzgar inmediatamente a alguien que esté haciendo algo que ellos piensan que es malo, y darle a alguien una segunda oportunidad y explicar las razones detrás de las decisiones de algunas personas.
“No todos tienen el privilegio de elegir un camino profesional o ir a la universidad, incluso si son blancos y están en Europa. Espero que la gente no se desanime por la palabra corrida de toros o el mundo que la rodea.”
Reques agrega que es poco probable que haya un futuro para las corridas de toros, incluso para aquellos que decidan seguirlo como carrera.
“La realidad es que es una industria en decadencia”, dice. “Está en declive, ya no existe.
“Las personas que quieren aferrarse a las tradiciones piensan que es muy grande, pero la mayoría de los toreros están desempleados. Ya no es lo que era, y eso es evidente en la película.”
El niño y el traje de luces se proyecta en Sheffield DocFest el domingo, antes de participar en otros festivales de cine en los próximos meses. Aconite Productions espera distribuirlo en el Reino Unido en una fecha posterior.
