Republicans are working to prevent a potential upset in the Nebraska Senate race as an independent candidate poses a challenge to Sen. Deb Fischer. Dan Osborn, a political newcomer running as an independent, is competing against Fischer in a state that strongly supports Republicans. Despite this, recent developments in the race have led to increased spending from Republican groups and a shift in favor of Osborn by the Cook Political Report.
Osborn, a steamfitter who led a strike against Kellogg’s in 2021, has gained momentum in the race with support from outside groups and a strong message of nonpartisanship. His campaign has received significant funding and is focused on appealing to a broad spectrum of voters, including Democrats, Republicans, and Independents.
While internal polling released by Osborn’s campaign shows him slightly ahead of Fischer, some remain skeptical about his chances of reaching 50% support. The NRSC and conservative groups have launched attacks against Osborn, painting him as a Democrat in disguise and tying him to progressive figures like Bernie Sanders.
Osborn has faced criticism for controversial remarks about Fischer’s team, but he has emphasized his commitment to standing up for regular people and not being controlled by party bosses or special interests. Despite the challenges he faces in a statewide Senate race, Osborn remains confident in his ability to win in November.
Fischer’s campaign has highlighted her endorsements and support from various groups in Nebraska, emphasizing the importance of her reelection for the state’s prosperity and security. Some Republicans believe that Fischer is not in political danger and that the increased spending in the race is a sign of respect for her candidacy.
