“Se desecha, pero es oro”

Zeeshan Ali has been a drag artist for a decade, performing across India. Central to his act are 45 wigs that he uses to transform into various characters. He believes that the right wig enhances his authenticity and stage presence. However, obtaining quality wigs was a challenge in the past, leading him to create makeshift wigs using wool and fabric.

Nowadays, the demand for wigs in India has increased, with not only drag artists and actors, but also straight women using wigs as a fashion statement. India is a major exporter of human hair, with Kolachi Venkatesh being one of the collectors who source hair from households, salons, and barbershops.

The collected hair, known as non-Remy hair, is sold to traders like Mr. Venkatesh, who then export it to countries like China for wig production. India’s wig-making industry has potential for growth, but it requires investment in advanced technology and training facilities. Diva Divine Hair, founded by Nidhi Tiwari, is one such Indian company that is making efforts to create high-quality wigs and hair extensions to cater to the growing market.

At the top end of the market is Temple or Remy hair, sourced from Hindu temples in the south of India. Raj Hair International is a major player in this sector, ensuring that the hair is carefully sorted and graded for quality. George Cherion, the company’s CEO, emphasizes the value of Remy hair due to its aligned cuticles and silky texture. The company has developed innovative methods to minimize wastage and enhance the quality of the hair they collect.
