It’s a very strange time for me to revisit that area because it’s becoming unrecognizable. Carroll Gardens is right next to it and is a very beautiful, sort of Italian neighborhood. It’s just bizarre how close they are to each other; you can see two different worlds within a block of each other.
How do these neighborhoods and their contrasts influence the music you create?
I think the industrial wasteland of Gowanus has a very dark vibe to it, and I think that’s definitely inspired some of our music. There’s also a lot of nostalgia for me associated with that area, and I think that comes through in a lot of our music, too. Carroll Gardens is more beautiful and has that Italian vibe; I feel like some of our more whimsical and beautiful moments in our music come from that side of things.

What about this song resonated with you?
It’s a beautiful song. That song came into my life when I was in a really dark place, and it just kind of brought me out of it. It has this really beautiful bossa nova, relaxing vibe, and I think it’s very emotive. I feel like the emotion of it just made a big impression on me at the time. I think it’s a beautiful song.
How does the emotion and vibe of that song translate into your own music?
I think the emotion and vibe of that song are very relaxing and introspective, and that’s definitely a vibe that I try to bring into our music. I think there’s a lot of introspection in our music, and that’s definitely something that I want to convey – that feeling of sitting with yourself and thinking about things. That song definitely captures that feeling for me, and I think it’s something that I want to capture in our music as well.
It’s a really striking story, for sure. I think it’s interesting how different forms of media can inspire and influence our creative process. Is there anything specific from the documentary that resonated with you?
I think just the intensity of their relationship and their dedication to each other and their art. It’s just a very romantic, tragic story. I think that kind of intensity is something that always sticks with me and definitely seeps into my songwriting in some way. It’s hard to put into words, but I think just the emotion and passion in their story is something that I find really compelling and inspiring.
It’s fascinating how these external sources can influence us in ways we might not even realize. How do you see this shaping your future work or projects?
I’m not sure yet, to be honest. I think I’m always just absorbing things and letting them marinate in my mind, and then they kind of come out in unexpected ways in my music. I think it’s just a natural part of the creative process for me. I’m always open to new sources of inspiration and letting them guide me in different directions creatively. So we’ll see where it takes me next!
Y fue visualmente en otro nivel, las imágenes que obtuvieron de los volcanes fueron increíbles.

Tal vez vi paralelismos en cómo trabajo con Abe – obviamente no tan dramático como trabajar en volcanes, pero es un viaje, trabajar con tu pareja en tu arte.

Sónicamente, se siente como un poco atípico y un limpiador de paladar. Es realmente simple y corto, lo que lo hace diferente. Narrativamente, la letra trata sobre estar en casa en tu lugar, así que se siente un poco como una conclusión de ese viaje.
Maternidad
Estaba aprendiendo sobre cómo tienes los mismos genes que tu madre y la madre de tu madre, todo el camino de vuelta, y eso me estaba volando la cabeza. La maternidad y la familia son obviamente algo de tema en el álbum; el título siendo AMAMA, que en realidad es la palabra para abuela en ambos lados de mi familia, que son partes diferentes del mundo. Siento que siempre estoy haciendo referencia a la familia – no es la primera vez que estoy pensando en un miembro de la familia al escribir. Pero la canción ‘Amama’ definitivamente fue especial de esa manera, que ella tuvo la oportunidad de retroalimentar la canción real y también inspirarla. No esperábamos que eso se convirtiera en el nombre del álbum, fue un poco de último minuto. Se sintió como la palabra correcta y tiene una estructura de palíndromo.
Es simplemente increíble pensar en cómo todas las pequeñas decisiones de tus familiares, ancestralmente incluso, han coincidido para crearte a ti y traerte a este momento. Hay tantas cosas que tuvieron que caer en su lugar. Y luego hacer referencia a esos miembros de tu familia, también, se siente como honrarlos – no solo a mí, también a los otros miembros de la banda. El video de la canción selló el significado de la maternidad para mí, porque usamos imágenes de las mamás de los otros miembros de la banda. Es simplemente increíble que podamos hacer esto – son todos nuestros ancestros, supongo.
