But I never agreed because I cannot have my work censored.â
And yet she has agreed now. âI am not hypocrite. I know that China has a lot of problems, but I also know that artists have a mission to change things. The idea is, if I go there and show my work, maybe I can change something. Because the energy of the work is so strong, it can penetrate the political system. It is utopian, but this is what I believe in.â
So AbramoviÄ will be in Shanghai for the opening of the exhibition, and is thinking about going to China for the first time. âI donât know whatâs going to happen. I might be arrested. I might be killed. I donât know. But I think itâs very important that I go and show my work.â
She has always been fearless; she has always pushed boundaries. She has always been uncompromising. But as we sign off, she says, âIâm 74, and I just want to have a peaceful life. I just want to be with my animals and my garden and my friends. I want to have a simple life.â
Itâs hard to imagine Marina AbramoviÄ having a simple life, but perhaps she deserves one.
It was a big message about peace.â And itâs that kind of message sheâll be taking to China, too. âItâs all about energy. There are so many things that are going on that we are not aware of. We are just so occupied with our daily lives, with our politics, with our wars, with our stupidities, that we forget that actually we are a small planet in the universe and we are all connected.â
She may not be a feminist, but sheâs certainly still a revolutionary. And sheâs bringing her revolution to China. “Puedo enviarte los datos, eso es incluso más que Trump”, dice, sonando un poco como Trump, quizás…
De todas formas, el punto es que Marina Abramović es realmente, realmente famosa. “En algunos países no puedo caminar sin un guardaespaldas. En Italia, las mujeres correrán a la calle y me darán un bebé solo para sostener”. ¿Más grande que el Papa, también, tal vez? “Honestamente soy amada, es verdad, se siente realmente genial”.
Me pregunto si alguna vez piensa nostálgicamente en los primeros días, viviendo en una furgoneta con Ulay y su perro pastor albanés. “Lo hago”, dice. Y luego ella sigue, diciendo que alguien está haciendo una película sobre ellos en ese momento, y quién va a interpretarla a ella, y hasta la furgoneta es famosa ahora. Alguien la encontró. Fue a un museo en Lyon, también al MoMA. Cuando la vio allí, “entendí lo lejos que había llegado, desde vivir allí, hasta el Museo de Arte Moderno.
