Ellyanne Wanjiku Chlystun, a 14-year-old girl from Kenya, has gained worldwide recognition for her dedication to environmental conservation. She has met notable figures such as King Charles and collaborated with Grammy award-winner Meji Alabi and former football star David Beckham in the fight against climate change. Ellyanne’s inspiration stems from Prof Wangari Maathai, Kenya’s renowned tree planter and Nobel laureate, who planted millions of trees to raise awareness about the impact of tree planting on a country’s development.
Despite initial resistance from her mother, Ellyanne persisted in following Prof Maathai’s footsteps. She founded a non-profit organization called Children With Nature in 2017 to educate children about the importance of environmental preservation. Ellyanne’s efforts have led to the planting of over 1.3 million trees globally, with a focus on planting in Kenya.
While she has been involved in various climate change campaigns, Ellyanne remains committed to tree-planting and plans to continue this work in the future. She has also ventured into filmmaking, featuring in documentaries that highlight the impact of climate change on wildlife. Ellyanne’s advocacy extends to urging governments to prioritize climate change action, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation for the survival of species like elephants. “Mi mayor sueño es plantar árboles en el Cinturón Verde de África,” dice Ellyanne, refiriéndose a la iniciativa de detener el avance del Desierto del Sahara plantando árboles desde Senegal en el oeste hasta Djibouti en el este.
Y ella quiere ser una “catalizadora” para la plantación de un billón de árboles alrededor del mundo para cuando cumpla 18 años – una meta que considera alcanzable.
“Me criaron para creer que todo es posible, especialmente para mí como joven.
“Mira lo que la Generación Z ha hecho en Kenia, con resiliencia lograron que se cancelara un proyecto de ley financiero completo y que se despidiera a todo el gabinete,” añade, dando un vistazo al espíritu político de su heroína, la Prof. Maathai.
Pero ella dice que no tiene intención de forjar una carrera política como la Prof. Maathai, diciendo: “Quiero graduarme de la escuela primaria y luego entrar a la secundaria y luego a la universidad. Quiero especializarme en economía, eso es seguro.”
