Everyday wireless devices emitting electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can lead to unexplained headaches, dizziness, heart palpitations, and chronic fatigue in millions of people worldwide. Previously known by various names such as Electrohypersensitivity, Microwave Syndrome, Havana Syndrome, and Radiation Sickness, a new term, Electromagnetic Radiation Syndrome (EMR Syndrome), is now gaining recognition.
As public awareness of the dangers of EMFs continues to grow, the shift in terminology signifies a significant milestone. Increased understanding of the connection between wireless radiation and its harmful health impacts is driving the demand for safer technology.
A ‘New Unifying Name for a 21st-Century Health Crisis’
The Children’s Health Defense report states that EMR Syndrome was introduced by the One Name Project, an online community formed in January 2024 to unite medical professionals, scientists, safe technology advocates, and individuals affected by EMR-related disabilities.
The One Name project characterizes EMR Syndrome as a condition associated with a range of symptoms linked to electromagnetic radiation emitted by modern technologies like cell towers, smart meters, Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices, and smart technologies. For those impacted, even minimal exposure to EMR can trigger severe reactions such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue, heart palpitations, and more, making them unable to tolerate many modern environments.
Individuals sensitive to EMFs have long been disregarded, facing skepticism and dismissal regarding their symptoms. However, the introduction of the term “EMR Syndrome” directly attributes the illness to electromagnetic radiation exposure, shifting the focus to the cause rather than the individual’s reaction.
By establishing a clear and unified term to identify this emerging health condition, individuals affected by wireless technology’s adverse effects will benefit from improved diagnosis clarity. This new terminology also paves the way for enhanced research efforts and policy changes prioritizing human health over unfettered technological advancements.
New Terminology Changes the Conversation for EMF-Sensitive Individuals
The process of selecting a new name for the condition was comprehensive and involved input from patients, researchers, and safe technology advocates. After multiple discussions, the name “EMR Syndrome” was chosen, striking a balance between scientific accuracy, public accessibility, and advocacy effectiveness.
The One Name Project is now focused on gaining formal recognition of EMR Syndrome from global organizations like the World Health Organization. They are also developing accommodation cards for individuals with this syndrome to carry and distribute for educational purposes.
Some People Feel the Effects of EMFs Worse Than Others
For individuals sensitive to EMFs, the effects can be debilitating and severe. The RT documentary “Wi-Fi Refugees” explores the challenges faced by people reporting adverse health effects due to EMFs, with some experiencing symptoms like pins and needles in the head, nausea, and other discomfort.
EMR Syndrome can develop suddenly after an illness or significant exposure event, or gradually over time as the body accumulates exposure to EMFs. Prof. David O. Carpenter highlights cases of individuals experiencing sudden sensitivity to EMFs following excessive exposure, leading to symptoms such as constant headaches and photophobia.
“It’s a classic case of electrohypersensitivity.”
• EMF sensitivity has had a significant impact on their lifestyle — Many of these individuals have taken extreme measures to reduce the effects of EMFs on their health, making significant changes to their lifestyle habits and living space to minimize their exposure.
In the documentary, Sue Howard shares how she used to stay in a specially constructed room just to avoid the debilitating pain from EMFs. She missed out on numerous events, like her daughter’s graduation, due to her symptoms.
Common Symptoms Associated with EMR Syndrome
EMFs affect individuals differently. For Godelieve Richard, it started with severe dizziness and nausea that led her to the ER (the dizziness never went away). For Jennifer, it began with upper abdominal pain and a metallic taste in her mouth. And for Sue, it was a burning sensation on her skin.
• Individuals with EMR Syndrome experience a variety of unpleasant symptoms — While symptoms vary from person to person, common indicators include skin irritation, confusion, fatigue, headaches, chest pain, and heart problems.
• Other reported symptoms associated with EMFs — EMF-sensitive individuals may also experience ear pain, insomnia, ringing in the ears, paralysis, panic attacks, seizures, body vibrations, and dizziness.
• EMF symptoms are often met with skepticism — The conventional medical community’s lack of recognition for this condition often leads to skepticism towards those suffering. Many individuals end up dismissed by their conventional physicians after undergoing tests and examinations.
In the documentary, Ida Pardo shares that she has spent thousands of dollars each year on medical evaluations and treatments for her symptoms, depleting most of her savings in the process.
EMFs Are a Mitochondrial Poison That’s Causing Massive Cellular Dysfunction
In 2020, I released my book “EMF*D” to educate the public about the dangers of EMFs, including the harms of 5G and how to protect yourself from exposure.
• EMFs severely damage your mitochondria — Understanding the impact of mitochondrial function on health and disease was a major motivator for writing the book. EMFs cause significant mitochondrial dysfunction, highlighting the danger posed by our wireless society.
• Having fewer and dysfunctional mitochondria can harm your health — Reduced and dysfunctional mitochondria accelerate aging and increase the risk of chronic diseases. By causing mitochondrial dysfunction, the wireless world is leading us towards premature health decline. “EMF*D” aims to raise awareness of this biological threat.
Martin Pall, Ph.D., an expert in the field, has contributed to my understanding of how EMFs harm living organisms. His research on EMFs makes him a qualified researcher in this area.
• Why do EMFs lead to chronic illnesses? — EMFs trigger mitochondrial damage via peroxynitrites, a type of reactive nitrogen species. This process contributes to chronic diseases and systemic inflammation.
• Peroxynitrites are potent reactive nitrogen species — They are linked to increased inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction, considered a root cause of modern chronic diseases.
• EMFs have various risks, including opening the blood-brain barrier, causing DNA fragmentation, altering cellular function, increasing cancer risk, affecting neurological health, contributing to reproductive issues, and altering the microbiome. The health effects of your gut microbiome are extensive, as it plays a crucial role in overall health.
To gain a better understanding of the harmful effects of EMFs and why it is imperative to address this pervasive threat, I recommend watching my full interview with Pall.
Strategies to Minimize EMF Exposure
Renaming EMF sensitivity to EMR Syndrome marks a significant milestone in acknowledging this condition and emphasizes that the issue lies with radiation, not the individuals.
Even though EMFs are invisible and imperceptible to most, research indicates that biological effects occur, whether you can sense them or not. Therefore, implementing measures to reduce your exposure is crucial for safeguarding your health. Here are some tips to consider:
• Connect your desktop computer to the internet using a wired connection and switch your desktop to airplane mode. Avoid wireless peripherals like keyboards, mice, and game systems, opting for wired alternatives instead.
• Turn off Wi-Fi when not in use, especially at night while sleeping. Consider hardwiring your home to eliminate Wi-Fi entirely. If your notebook lacks Ethernet ports, use a USB Ethernet adapter for a wired connection.
• Disable electricity to your bedroom at night to reduce electrical fields from wall wires. Use a meter to determine if adjacent rooms require power shutdown as well.
• Use a battery-operated clock without a light feature to avoid unnecessary exposure at night.
• Replace microwave ovens with steam convection ovens for safer food heating, as microwaves are significant EMF sources in homes.
• Avoid smart appliances and thermostats that rely on wireless signals, including smart TVs. Opt for a large computer monitor instead, as they do not emit Wi-Fi signals.
• Decline smart meters whenever possible, or add a shield to existing meters to reduce radiation emission.
• Consider relocating your baby’s bed to your room instead of using wireless baby monitors, or opt for a hard-wired monitor.
• Replace CFL bulbs with incandescent ones and eliminate fluorescent lights from your home due to their negative health effects.
• Refrain from carrying your cellphone on your body unless it’s in airplane mode. Keep it away from your bedroom while sleeping and use the speakerphone feature with the phone at least 3 feet away from you when in use.
• Limit cellphone use and opt for VoIP software phones connected via wired internet to reduce exposure.
