Kiera Chion is in favor of allocating a portion of the funds raised by her children’s school council to support other schools. According to the most recent data available, TDSB schools collectively raised $35 million in 2022-23. The annual fun fair at Kiera Chion’s children’s school in Toronto’s Oakwood Village neighborhood is an elaborate event, with corporate sponsors contributing in exchange for branding opportunities. The event typically raises over $25,000, which has been used to fund various school activities and programs. Ms. Chion believes in the importance of contributing to other schools and supporting the community. The issue of whether schools should be required to donate a percentage of their fundraising money to a common fund is currently being debated by TDSB trustees. Some parents support the idea, while others have concerns about the impact on donations and administrative costs. In a survey conducted by TDSB staff, a majority of respondents favored a voluntary contribution to the common fund. The total school-generated funds for TDSB schools in 2022-23 amounted to $35 million, including donations from external charities and parents. There is a significant disparity in fundraising amounts among different schools, highlighting the economic differences within the school system. The debate over mandatory contributions continues, with some trustees advocating for equity and others emphasizing the importance of parental choice in fundraising efforts.
