Inglaterra y Brendon McCullum deben comenzar la reconstrucción al estilo del Manchester United después de un sorprendente desempeño en la Copa de Campeones | Noticias de Críquet

Some believe Buttler should be replaced as skipper entirely, although the decision may be taken out of McCullum’s hands if the wicketkeeper-batsman decides to retire from international cricket altogether. If not, Buttler may yet be given the chance to lead England in the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

If Buttler does step down, Eoin Morgan is the obvious candidate to return as captain having led England to their first-ever World Cup win in 2019. Morgan, though, is now 38 and may not have a long-term future in the side. Other options include Sam Billings, who stood in for Buttler in the Champions Trophy, and Ollie Pope, who has captained Surrey in the past.

McCullum must make a choice quickly, with England’s next white-ball assignment a three-match T20 series in Bangladesh in March. The first game is in Dhaka on March 7 with the final two matches in Chittagong. England will then play a five-match ODI series against the same opposition.

McCullum’s first series in charge will be a stern examination of his credentials as a head coach. The Kiwi was appointed in January having previously worked as an assistant coach with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL and as a head coach with Lahore Qalandars in the PSL.

It’s a significant step up for McCullum, who has never coached an international side before. His reputation as an innovative and attacking captain is well known, but coaching is a different skill entirely.

England’s recent results suggest they need more than just a change of leadership. The team have won just four of their last 20 T20 internationals and three of their last 10 ODIs. They are currently ranked sixth in the world in T20 cricket and fifth in the world in 50-over cricket.

The talent is there, with players like Jason Roy, Liam Livingstone, and Saqib Mahmood all capable of winning games on their own. But England lack consistency and leadership, both on and off the field.

McCullum’s task is to instill belief and confidence in his players, to give them the freedom to express themselves and play without fear. If he can do that, England could yet become a force to be reckoned with in white-ball cricket once again.

But if he can’t, England’s struggles could continue for some time yet. The pressure is on McCullum to deliver, and deliver quickly.

It’s clear that England’s recent performances have not lived up to their previous high standards. Buttler’s resignation as white-ball captain is just one indication of the team’s struggles. Brook may be the frontrunner to take over, but McCullum is open to the idea of splitting the captaincy duties between different formats in order to help the team regain its winning ways.
