“Kenya’s embattled Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has dubbed himself the “truthful man”, crediting his rapid rise to power to his commitment to speaking truth to those in authority. However, as he faces impeachment proceedings, he attributes his troubles to his outspoken nature.

Before his election as MP in 2017, Gachagua was relatively unknown outside of his central Kenya constituency. It was during the lead-up to the 2022 elections that he gained prominence by opposing President Uhuru Kenyatta’s preferred successor, Raila Odinga, and aligning himself with William Ruto instead.

Despite being a newcomer to politics, Gachagua’s ability to mobilize support in Mount Kenya, the country’s largest voting bloc, helped Ruto secure the presidency. This alliance led to Gachagua being sworn in as deputy president just over two years ago.

Gachagua’s relationship with Kenyatta soured after he teamed up with Ruto, but he has since apologized for his actions. Despite his reputation as a fierce political figure, he now faces allegations of corruption, money-laundering, and other misconduct, with many legislators pushing for his removal from office.

While Gachagua continues to maintain his commitment to speaking the truth and representing the interests of central Kenya, critics argue that his approach has alienated fellow politicians and promoted tribalism. Despite these criticisms, Gachagua remains steadfast in his principles and his dedication to his constituents.”
