Ten years ago, architect Malcolm Wildeboer found the perfect spot for his client’s future house in Ontario. Surrounded by hemlocks and with views of a serene lake, he envisioned a contemporary structure that harmonized with the natural landscape. Wildeboer worked closely with the client, who shared his passion for the outdoors, to protect the trees on the property.
The client had been searching for the ideal location for years before discovering this roughly 20-acre property. Collaborating with Wildeboer and design studio ACDO, they planned a materials-forward house inspired by traditional lodge retreats and the beauty of the setting. The house, spanning 10,000 square feet over two wings and three levels, features a palette of concrete, soapstone, and oak, showcasing meticulous artisanal details throughout.
The living and dining area, with its soaring ceilings and concrete fireplace, is central to the home’s public wing, perfect for hosting dinner parties. Custom furniture and rugs create distinct zones within the room, while the kitchen, with its wire-brushed oak cabinetry and emerald quartzite accents, adds a sculptural element to the space.
The designers used unique stone varieties in the bathrooms and office, creating a bold and refined aesthetic. Each guest bedroom is uniquely designed, reflecting different seasonal palettes found in eastern Ontario. The lower level of the home is dedicated to entertainment, featuring a cinema and a walk-in wine storage room with granite accents that connect the interiors to nature. “Obtienes ese acabado rugoso”, dice Chan, “como encontrarías en las montañas.”
Aunque el cliente y su familia no residen en su escapada en el bosque durante todo el año, no lo clasifican como una vivienda de vacaciones. “Nuestros corazones y mentes nunca abandonan el hogar”, dice, señalando que su intersección de belleza, funcionalidad y relación con el entorno circundante cumplen perfectamente su deseo de compartir la propiedad con aquellos que le importan.
