“There’s a lot of sameness now,” says Smith. “You see people in athleisure wear everywhere. It’s like they’re going to the gym, but they’re not. They’re going to the store. It’s just different. It’s a different world.”
Despite the nostalgia for the fashion and creativity of the 80s club scene, Smith acknowledges that times have changed. But through her book, Camera Girl, she hopes to capture and celebrate a moment in time when getting dressed up and going out was more than just a night out – it was an event, a statement, and a celebration of individuality and creativity. “Pero, para bien o para mal, eso podría estar a punto de cambiar. ‘No es una razón para pasar por este horrible [tiempo]’, pero si algo bueno surge de ello, ella espera que ‘haya otra explosión de creatividad’.
