Rust: Alec Baldwin arrives in court ahead of trial
Actor Alec Baldwin arrived at a New Mexico courthouse on Tuesday for the beginning of his trial in a fatal shooting on the set of the Western film Rust.
Mr. Baldwin, 66, is facing involuntary manslaughter charges, which he denies. The trial will determine his criminal liability in the October 2021 death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Hutchins, 42, was killed when a gun Baldwin was using during a scene rehearsal went off, fatally striking her and wounding director Joel Souza.
Jury selection began Tuesday morning with prosecutors and Baldwin’s attorneys questioning potential jurors about various topics, including their political affiliations and knowledge of the case.
A panel of 12 jurors and four alternates must be selected before opening statements, scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
Baldwin, best known for his roles in “30 Rock” and “Saturday Night Live,” pleaded not guilty to the felony charge. He claims he did not pull the trigger and that the gun went off when he cocked the revolver’s hammer. His defense team argues that other crew members should have ensured the gun’s safety.
However, prosecutors have called this claim “absurd,” alleging that Baldwin did not mention this information during his initial interviews after the shooting and arguing that he had a responsibility to follow basic gun safety protocols.
What happened on the Rust set?

In October 2021, Baldwin was rehearsing on the Rust set near Santa Fe, New Mexico. He was practicing a cross-body draw of the gun when the firearm discharged, hitting Hutchins and Souza.
Court documents revealed that Baldwin and others on set were unaware that the gun contained live ammunition. It was later discovered that the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, brought live bullets to the set, leading to the tragic incident.
Gutierrez-Reed was charged and found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Hutchins’ death and was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
What are the claims in the case?
One of the key questions in the case is whether Baldwin pulled the trigger or if the gun malfunctioned.
Baldwin’s defense team argues that he did not pull the trigger, while prosecutors portray him as an unsafe firearm handler, citing evidence from the FBI report.
During the trial, prosecutors will emphasize that Baldwin, as a gun handler, had a duty to ensure safe handling and must be held accountable for the tragic outcome.
The trial will focus on determining Baldwin’s actions leading to the shooting and whether he fulfilled his safety responsibilities on set.
