It’s been a pretty surreal 24 hours, to be honest,” Livingstone said after being appointed skipper. “It’s something I’ve always dreamt of and to get the chance to do it is amazing.”
Livingstone, 28, has played 11 ODIs and 14 T20Is for England, with his last appearance coming in the T20 World Cup final defeat to Australia in November.
He has been in fine form in domestic white-ball cricket, smashing 348 runs at an average of 58 in the recent Royal London Cup, including a blistering 108 off 57 balls against Derbyshire.
Now, he has the opportunity to lead his country in a three-match series against the West Indies, with games on Thursday, Saturday and Monday.
“I want the next few games to be a hell of a lot of fun, play some good cricket, win some games and then hand the reins back to Jos,” Livingstone added.
England will be hoping Livingstone can inspire his young squad to success in the absence of Buttler, with the focus firmly on building towards the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.
