Getty Images reported that Friends star Matthew Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy to treat his depression. The coroner determined that this treatment was not responsible for Perry’s death, as prosecutors alleged that he had been supplied with illicit ketamine. Five individuals, including two doctors, Perry’s assistant, and an alleged drug dealer, have been charged in connection with providing the drug outside of his treatment plan.
Ketamine is an anaesthetic that can be used to treat depression, anxiety, and pain, but it can also have dissociative effects and be used illicitly. Chronic use of ketamine has been linked to liver damage and bladder problems. Ketamine infusion therapy is used for cases of depression where traditional anti-depressants have not been effective.
